Welcome to The New Loony Dook web site. |
|
The
world-famous Loony Dook celebrated the 22nd successive event on
1 January 2008 when Queensferry welcomed a massive crowd
of both participants and spectators to take part in and
witness this amazing occasion. |
Queensferry
man Norman Coleborne (pictured) who, together with his
mate Gordon Thompson has already handed over a terrific
£3250 in sponsorship collected mainly from colleagues at
Aegon Scottish Equitable to the "Children in Need"
charity, is a regular Dooker and a tireless worker for
many charities. |
|
This
picture includes friends of local man Terry Bryant on whose
behalf took part in the Loony Dook to raise funds for the Maggie
Centre cancer care charity. To date they have raised an
astonishing £6000 with more sponsorship to come. To view a

The
2008 Loony Dook was once again an overwhelming success with an
estimated 600 people in the
water and some 3000 spectators gathered to witness the fantastic spectacle of all
these "Loonys", many in fancy dress, plunge into the freezing waters of the
Forth. More importantly many thousands of pounds will be raised for a
variety of charities examples of which are shown below left. The
main charity to benefit from this year's event will again be the
Radio Forth "Help a Child" appeal. |
This
photograph gives an excellent impression of the huge numbers who
take part in the event nowadays, a far cry from the handful who
started it all off way back in 1987. It also shows the
iconic Forth Bridge, almost completely covered in typical east
coast haar with Queensferry lifeboat and crew visible on the
water. The lifeboat and crew members have been on standby
for the Loony Dook every year almost since the beginning |

| Many people and organisations have contributed to the
success of the Loony Dook over the years and the organisers are very
grateful to them all, including The City of Edinburgh Council,
Edinburgh's Winter Festivals Team, Lothian and Borders Police, the
British Red Cross and the RNLI. We are also very grateful to webmaster
Kevin Mullen for all his help in creating this web site. |

KIRSTY DOOKS IN
PORTSMOUTH Queensferry lass, 16
year-old Kirsty Young did her own Loony Dook at this year at Southsea
Beach in Portsmouth. Kirsty, a student at Queensferry High
School, took part in this year’s event raising £121.60 for the radio Forth “Help a Child”
appeal. Kirsty, who took part in the event in Queensferry for
the first time last year, is spending Christmas and New Year
with relatives in Portsmouth and was determined not to miss her invigorating
Dook even though she is some 450 miles from the main event here
in Queensferry. The photograph shows Kirsty and her cousin
Lewis Fletcher enjoying their Dook in
Portsmouth. To view the whole set of pictures

Well done Kirsty
and Lewis. |
